Tea Ceremonies
✺✳ ┅ ⑅ ┅ ✳✺

At the Jade Cat, we offer to host Doman tea ceremonies (based on the IRL ones held in Japan and other countries). Booking for these ceremonies must be done in advance in order to give the host time to prepare. The shorter ceremonies can be booked for a time within cafe opening hours, but the longer ceremony must be booked for outside hours. We also try to regularly host a free public tea ceremony for those interested in the ceremonies, but aren't fully sure as to what they are or have questions.See the ceremony guide below for more information on the different ceremonies we offer here.

Tea Ceremony Guide

Welcome! This page is for those who have reserved a special tea ceremony, or for those just curious about the process of the ceremony itself and want to learn more!A tea ceremony is meant to bring about mindfulness, clarity, and relaxation. To ensure the maximum benefit and enjoyment for all participants, we ask that you please read this guide carefully. Should you have questions, please ask them before the ceremony begins.
While the structure of the ceremony may differ, the following rules still apply:
1. Be respectful. This goes without saying, but showing proper respect to your host and those around you is not only important for the ceremony itself, but for your daily life.
2. Limit your speech. The main focus of a tea ceremony is mindfulness and relaxation. Speech can be a distraction to your inner self and what's around you. Focus instead on listening to the sounds of nature and your surroundings. Show your appreciation through your actions and gestures, rather than with words.
3. Arrive on time. Not too early to make your host rush, and not too late to make them wait for you. We are aware that life happens, and that takes priority over this game any day. We just ask that as soon as you know you will be late, or that you need to cancel, please tell your host through Discord. Appointments can always be rescheduled if needed, real life can't.
Now that you know the three basic rules, click the option below that fits the ceremony you booked or are wanting to learn about.❀•°❀°•❀ ❀•°❀°•❀ ❀•°❀°•❀ ❀•°❀°•❀
Disclaimer: Actual tea ceremonies require months and even years of training for the host to perform the ceremony properly. We do not claim to be trained experts in this art, nor wish to offend those who've dedicated the time to learning this. We just wish to bring the joy of the tea ceremony to those in the RP community.

Chakai

This is the shorter of the two ceremonies based on the Japanese style of tea ceremony, only meant to last just under an hour to make it easier for those with busy schedules. Should you have questions, please ask them before the ceremony begins. While this version is more informal than the full version, it's best to get most questions about the procedures before it begins to allow more time to enjoy the ceremony while it's happening.1. Before the ceremony begins, please wait outside in the garden area to the left of the building. Take the time to admire the sights and sounds of nature around you.
2. Once your host has been notified of your arrival via /tell or through discord, they will come outside to greet you with a bow and head inside the building. Before following, please cleanse your hands and mouth in the bamboo fountain outside prior to heading indoors.
3. Be sure to remove your shoes and set them aside in the entryway. There are benches provided if you need to sit to remove them. When you're ready, head up the stairs to your right.
4. Take a moment to pause at the entryway to the tea room and admire the hanging scroll and flowers your host specifically chose for your ceremony. When you are ready, proceed through the center sliding doors and take a seat on one of the cushions around the central platform.
5. After you're seated, your host will join you and take their place on the central platform. After greeting you with a bow, they will take their seat.
6. When everyone's seated, you can ask the host about the garden and/or the hanging scroll they chose for you.
7. After your host answers you, they will serve you the main sweet for this ceremony.
8. While you're enjoying your sweet, the host will begin preparing the ceremonial matcha.
9. After you have been served your tea, to drink it, please ensure the face, or design on the cup is facing outwards. While you drink your tea, you may ask the host about the sweet you enjoyed and/or the flowers they chose for you.
10. After the tea is finished, your host will escort you back outside and you are to bow to them to show your thanks and appreciation before leaving quietly.

Chaji

This is the longer of the two ceremonies based on the Japanese style of tea ceremony. For time reference, this can last anywhere from two to four hours, so be sure to set aside adequate time in advance. For the full benefits of the ceremony, please make sure to ask all questions beforehand. This is the most formal of all the ceremony types, so please keep speech to a minimum.1. Upon arrival, head inside the building. A staff member will escort you to an area to wait and serve you some warm water to cleanse your palate. This is the time to ask any questions about the ceremony you have before it begins in earnest.
2. After you're finished, the staff member will escort you out to the garden to wait for your host. While you wait, take this time to admire the garden and listen to the sounds of nature around you.
3. Your host will come to when they are ready and greet you with a bow. They will then head inside the building silently. You are to do the same, but first, take a moment to cleanse your hands and mouth in the bamboo fountain outside before heading indoors.
4, Remove your shoes and set them aside in the entryway. There are benches provided in case you need to sit to remove them. When you are ready, head up the stairs to your right.
5. Take a moment to pause before the sliding doors and look towards the hanging scroll your host chose for this ceremony. After reflecting on it, head through the central sliding doors and take your seat on one of the cushions around the central platform.
6. After you're seated, your host will join you in the room and take their place on the central platform, greeting you with a bow before taking their seat.
7. The eldest guest can then ask them about the garden and the hanging scroll you viewed earlier.
8. You will then be served a five-course Doman-style meal along with a small cup of sake.
9. After the meal is finished, the host will begin burning the charcoal and light the incense.
10. They will then serve you the main sweet.
11. After you've finished, you will then be escorted back out to the garden while your host returns inside to prepare the area for the second half of the ceremony.
12. When preparations have finished, your host will return to fetch you. They will greet you with a bow before heading into the building. Once again, please cleanse your hands and mouth in the fountain before heading inside.
13. After removing your shoes again, head back up the stairs. You will notice that the scroll has been replaced with a bouquet of flowers that the host has chosen for your ceremony. Take a moment to examine them before heading back to your seats.
14. The host will then begin preparing the first type of matcha - koi-cha (thick tea).
15. While they're preparing and serving the tea, the eldest guest can ask them about where the matcha was purchased from and the flowers that were chosen.
16. Once the koi-cha is finished, your host will burn more charcoal and incense to prepare for the second type of matcha.
17. You will then be served the sub-sweet. Once you are finished, your host will then begin making the second type of matcha - usu-cha (thin tea).
18. After the usu-cha is finished, your host will then escort you back outside. You are to bow to them first to show your thanks and appreciation for the ceremony before taking your leave quietly.

Laoren Cha

This style of tea ceremony is based on the ones held in China as well as a few other Asian countries. Unlike the Japanese style, there is less of a structure that the guest needs to follow. All you need to do when participating in this ceremony is sit back, relax, and watch as your host prepares the tea. The only thing required of you as the guest is to say which type of tea you would like - green, blue, yellow, white, or red tea.The name of this style of ceremony translates to "old people tea" as elders typically have more time on their hands to prepare it and enjoy tea with their friends and relatives. While you don't need to be an elder to participate, take the time while your host prepares the tea and while sipping it to quiet your mind and focus on enjoying the moment. While not present in all versions of this style, we've chosen to add tea pets to ours. Tea pets are small ceramic animals that the host pours the initial impure batches of the tea over, letting them soak it in and leaving them scented with whatever the last pour was. As a bonus for booking this ceremony type, after your ceremony, you'll get your own tea pet (minion) to take home with you!

Free Ceremony Event

When possible, we like to try to host a free tea ceremony event that is open to the public for anyone who wishes to participate. While speech is usually limited at the normal ceremonies, with this, we encourage people to ask as many questions as they want, though we ask you to please remain respectful of time and the people around you as best as possible. When at least one person is interested in participating, the ceremony will begin.1. Before it begins in full, a staff member will escort you to the waiting area on the main floor and give you a cup of hot water to cleanse your palate.
2. Your host will come to greet you when they're ready and escort you upstairs.
3. Before heading through the sliding doors, take a moment to look to your right at the hanging scroll and flowers your host chose specifically for the ceremony that day. When ready, head through the center sliding doors and take your seat on one of the cushions around the central platform.
3. Once everyone is seated, your host will enter the room and take their place on the center platform.
4. The host will then tell you about the scroll they chose for the ceremony.
5. They will then begin serving you a five-course kaiseki meal accompanied by small cups of sake.
6. Once the meal is over, they will begin burning the charcoal and light the incense. While the pot is heating, you'll be served the main sweet.
7. After you're done eating your sweets, the host will tell you about the flowers they chose for that day.
8. When the pot is hot enough, the host will begin preparing one of the two matcha types - koi-cha (thick tea) or usu-cha (thin tea) and serve it. When drinking your tea, be sure to have the design on the cup facing outwards so that it's not hidden.
9. Lastly, once you're finished, you may stand up and bow to your host in thanks before taking your leave. You're welcome to stay in the teahouse to relax or take a dip in our onsen for as long as you like before heading home.

Onsen

Enjoy a relaxing stay in our onsen! Located in Room 5 or outdoors, let the hot water coupled with the naturalistic atmosphere melt away your troubles. There is no cost to enter, so come in at your leisure and stay as long as you like.

Onsen Ettiquette

Rule No 1: Wash Before Entering the Onsen
There is a shower and changing area to the side. Please make sure to thoroughly clean yourself before entering the water.
Rule No. 2: Clothing Requirements
In most onsens, it is a requirement for full nudity, as clothing, towels, and other garments are considered "dirty" and should never be worn in the onsen. However, we are a SFW-venue, so we ask that you please wear at minimum a swimsuit.
Rule No. 3: Modesty is Appreciated
Modesty is expected even with the limited clothing. Use one of the small towels to cover your private areas as you move between areas of the room.
Rule No. 4: Never Dip Your Towel in the Water
This harks back to Rule No. 2. and the notion that towels are dirty and should not come into contact with the water. Most people simply wear the small cloth on their heads. It may look funny, but it’s the easiest way to not lose your towel and not dirty the water at the same time.
Rule No. 5: Don’t Go Under (Or Get Your Hair in the Water)
It’s pretty much forbidden to dunk your head under the water in an onsen — and for good reason. No one wants mouth germs floating around in an environment where bacteria thrive. It’s also a good idea never to dip your hair into the water, mostly to prevent oils and residual grooming products from dirtying the water, but also to simply keep hair out of the bath's drains.
Rule No. 6: Stay and Relax After Your Dip
There are plenty of areas in the Jade Cat where you can relax after your dip in the waters, so take advantage of them when you can!
